My Teaching Experience

After training in two school s in shgefield, UK, I began my career as head of small department, in a rural school, in Doncaster. and then after three years I progressed to move onto running a larger department at a challenging inner city Academy in Sheffield. At both of these schools the subject area grew in popularity and we offered both GCSE Catering and Food Technology as well as BTEC Hospitality in the upper years.

I then spent 10 years working for the English Schools Foundation in Hong Kong. Whilst there my biggest achievement was co-authoring the specification for Food Science and Technology specification for the International Baccalaureate, which is now being taught in many school across the world. I have taught GCSE Food Preparation &Nutrition and introduced BTEC Hospitality in the the IBCP curriculum, but the highlight of this part pf my career has been the opportunity to write and teach a range of non-assessed courses that focus on developing students core competencies; Collaboration, Communication, Creativity Citizenship, Critical Thinking and Character. These courses are taught in mixed ages groups, from years 9-11 and all have inter- disciplinary links, such Sweet Indulgence which is a baking course linked to Business/Media and Scientist in the Kitchen which focuses on Food Chemistry.

I have completed inspiring professional development in Positive School training and Collaborative Professionalism, with Professor Andy Hargreaves. This led to me working with the Humites faculty on the teaching of global food issues linked to the Untied Nation's Sustainable Development Goals and the the Physical Health faculty on a school wide nutrition and wellbeing program.

The other aspect of the job i have loved is being able to plan and run overseas food and culture trips, to Vietnam, Thailand, Indonesia and twice to Yorkshire, using some of my old contacts.
